End of 7th Month

I think things are begin to wear on me a bit more now.  It might be the prolonged quarantining is also wearing me at the edges and making everything a little bit harder.  I started looking online for sleep shorts or yoga shorts.  So far, I have been deterred from buying anything because it seems my options are to either spend a ridiculous amount of money for something that, pre-COVID I could buy in a thrift store for under $5, or comb endlessly through completely unrelated listings on ebay.

(For the record, I do not recommend you type the phrase "silk boxer shorts" into the ebay search engine.  None of the things I saw, many of which I would consider horrifying and traumatizing, were either silk, or boxer shorts, or shorts at all.  I had a similar problem typing in simply "yoga shorts," and boggled at who were these listings exactly marketing to?  Certainly not women looking to do yoga, I am sure of that.  Also, to continue along this rather sideways tangent, when did the word "silk" stop meaning a fabric woven from the cocoons of a specific kind of moth?  I swear I have clicked on so many items listings promising "silk," even selection the "100% silk" filter on ebay, only to read down into the fine print and see "100% polyester." WELL THEN IT'S *NOT* SILK, IS IT?  I might very well have a harder time with Depth Year if I hadn't already been grossly disappointed (sometimes downright disgusted) with current American marketing trends, particularly in women's wear.  It makes it a lot easier to not want to shop when every time you see something pretty in a shop window, in a catalog, or online, you look at the fabric content and whether it's $30 or $130, it almost always is some sort of plastic fabric.  And with COVID, my usual choice of thrift stores just seems needlessly risky.  Ebay isn't ideal, either, from that point of view, but at least I can browse without risk, tend to get fed up long before I find anything I like, and if by some miracle I did find something, I could always disinfect the package, let it sit for a few days, then remove the contents and wash them immediately. But so far, temptation hasn't gotten past one or two pages of "is this pajamas or is this porn?" before I just close the tab and forget about it.

Thankfully, on the shoe front, while I have learned a painful lesson about long distance city walking in barefoot shoes (less than 5 miles, totally fine, over 10, not so fine), my S/o was able to glue/clamp my everyday tabi sneakers back together.  The hiking sandals need to be in the trashcan yesterday.  In fact, so let it be written, so let it be done.  I just got up and put them in the trash.  Their soles are so hole-y that I can't even wear them to the corner store without slipping.  I do have other comfy sandals, but nothing that I would intentionally get wet or wear on uneven terrain.

So quarantine and stresses around the world are weakening my resolve as of this past month, but so far I'm holding out.  The convention I normally go to for my birthday has also been cancelled, which removes a huge amount of temptation when it comes to needless shopping.  The S/o argues that I should be allowed a break from my depth year for my birthday - maybe - but it would have to be something really amazing, I think. Also, while he has caught on and hasn't given me anything that wasn't either edible or useful, I'm not going to force the issue if he wants to get me a birthday gift in September.  We'll cross the Christmas bridge when we get there - if I make it all the way to the end of the year -and if COVID doesn't cancel Christmas.
