End of Second Month
I almost didn't write a blog for the end of February, because there was very little to say in regards to my attempt at a Depth Year. The S/o seems to have some mental block around remembering, and it feels like I have to constantly remind him that no, I will not be buying that, and no, I don't want to go thrift shopping, because I'm not doing any of that this year! I don't think he honestly forgets, I think it's some other weird thing. Like how he can't see a generic Mr. Swirly/Mr. Icy/whatever ice cream truck without saying "Let's go get ice cream!" even though I've reminded him every time for years that I cannot eat that kind of ice cream, it will make me ill. So who knows what it's actually about.
The only real temptation I faced in February was that my favorite indie perfume oil company that is known for its amazing array of limited edition/seasonal updates had their annual Lupercalia update. Sometimes they update and I don't want anything. This was not one of those times. There were at least half a dozen bottles that seemed to be right up my alley! But, I have been a collector of their oils for years, and I have more than I could possibly use within the foreseeable future. So, I didn't buy any. It was really difficult to resist not even buying single 1ml samples, but I didn't. Instead, I pulled out my spreadsheet that lists every oil they've ever made, and the scent notes that go along with it. I compared the oils I wanted by their notes to oils I already have with similar notes, and pulled those and put them out to encourage me to use them instead. So, while I might really want to try a scent with "Rice paper, white tea, and rice milk with blackberry juice and bergamot," instead, I already have one with "Rice paper, white gardenia, and raw honey" or "Red currant and rice milk with almond blossom and white tea," so wear them instead.
Aside from that one temptation, February was pretty easy. I do occasionally feel "guilty" or like I'm "cheating" when I run out of something and get to go shopping for a replacement. For example, I ran out of shampoo (bound to happen eventually), and used up the last of my daily moisturizer with SPF. These are both things that I consider absolutely necessary to good health and hygiene, so since I was out, I got to go shopping for more. I was good, though, and didn't add any any unnecessary items.
As I'm getting into the rhythm of things, I don't think I'll have too much difficulty as the year goes on. My next test will be at the end of March. I will be taking a little personal vacation time to fly out to Puerto Rico for a few days. This will be my first time traveling while attempting my Depth Year. I'm hoping that even though I'm normally a pretty avid souvenir shopper, that since I'm just visiting Puerto Rico, that I won't feel any pressure to buy things. I am already planning a guided hike into the rainforest there, and I will of course be eating well for the entire trip, but the goal is that the suitcase comes back with the same contents as when I left. We'll see!
