End of 10th Month

I think this was my first month where I had a clear and inexcusable slip.  My neighbors were having a yard sale and I picked up an aluminum mixing bowl (did need, have needed for a couple of years) for $2, and then also got a feather quill pen and ink bottle (unopened) for $2 - which was totally in no way needed.  I also bought a book.  Well, I bought two books - but one is a gift for a family member, and the other one the S/O technically paid for, but it still counts because he was trying to bend the rules for me because it was a Middle Earth encyclopedia found at an old bookshop for $5.  So, even though he paid for it, I'm still counting it as a slip.

On the other hand, I have successfully resisted all the DSW coupons I've been getting, even though my only pair of comfy brown shoes for walking (not boots) are getting ratty.  But, they still work, they're not falling apart yet, so maybe they'll make it through this brief fall season and into 2021. I also opted out of one of the most fun annual gifting games I normally play online.  In a fandom bulletin board system, a cluster of people get together online in October to play a game like Secret Santa except themed around Halloween.  Normally it's a lot of fun and I have a blast shopping for my giftee, and then end up getting a big box of stuff at the end of the month.  It seemed like another sneaky loophole, so I opted out this year.

Of course Halloween has come and gone by now, and nothing much came of it.  I normally don't spend a lot of money on costumes in the first place, but obvious there's no temptation there this year.

Temptation is building, however. Between the tiny two slips earlier in the month, and then having to avoid a social excursion based around thrift stores because I absolutely cannot be trusted to go into a thrift store and come out having just looked and not bought anything.  Also, with COVID numbers going up all over the country, I'm not sure looking in a thrift store where I can't buy anything is worth the risk of the added exposure on the subway and being in used item shops which are not always known for cleanliness in the best of times.  But the temptation is there, and I can feel it creeping up as the year starts to turn dark and cold again.  I can generally resist Black Friday with no problem, but Cyber Monday will be an interesting test.
