End of First Month
I haven't had much to write about regarding my Depth Year since the 2nd week; but I thought that an end-of-month update, regardless of anything might be a good idea.
It's been easy enough to stay on track for the last half of January. No real temptations or having to remind myself about shopping. I did skip the swap meet at the bar, didn't see much point in it. I did have to get a pair of boots repaired, but I think that having things you already own repaired instead of replaced absolutely goes along with the Depth Year theme.
The only other question I came up against towards the end of the month was deciding that donations and contributions to things that don't result in a physical thank you gift are still in-line with my Depth Year. There's nothing about Depth Year that should exclude donating to your favorite charity (especially if it's not buying a thing for charity, I still think that's probably a no), and likewise, supporting Kickstarter campaigns (that don't result in a tangible physical object, but are more support of an idea or concept) also fall in the OK area. After all, I'm not getting anything out of these donations, I'm just contributing to help out, because I believe in what's being done. This probably shouldn't even be a question, except that I've somehow gotten my brain twisted up and confusing Depth Year with more of a monetary/spending context than an accumulation context. Maybe I'll get that sorted out as I go along.
And as monetary reviews go, starting last year I kept a pretty in depth spreadsheet on my spending habits. Comparing Jan 2019 to Jan 2020, there's really hardly any difference in spending, I guess right after the holidays, there's not much pull for it anyway, so maybe January is just an easy month. March and April were much bigger spending months, but I was also getting gear together for my South American Adventure, including 5 day hike to Choquequirao in Peru. There might be another hike this year, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
As expected, any excess funds are getting funneled into food and travel. Me and some friends have already booked a house upstate for a Hygge Weekend for February, and that will require some extra grocery and gas funds as well, but should be safe from "stuff." Maybe a good time to pull out a board game (or two) that I haven't played in years.
So we can close out January as a total success, but maybe a fairly easy start.
